The easiest way to accept card payments!
Together with the free payleven app, you are now ready to start.
Here’s an explanation of the different features and symbols on your Chip & PIN reader:
Registering with payleven
Register on our website
Sign up on www.payleven.co.uk. You can register either as a Business or Private Individual. Enter your email address and press the Get Payleven button.
Complete the required fields on the registration form.
Now, click Activate Your Device.
Please enter the serial number of your device, this can be found on the back of your device, as shown in the picture. Fill in the numbers, without the hyphen, which come after S/N. Press Finish registration.
You will now come to a page leading you to the next steps. Go to your email account and check that you have received a confirmation e-mail from payleven, if not in your inbox, please check your Spam folder. Click on the link provided in the e-mail to activate your account.
You may receive an e-mail or be contacted by customer care shortly to verify your account profile.
In your payleven account
Log into your payleven account using the e-mail and password you used to register.
Now click on Add bank account. In order to receive your payleven settlements, please enter the details of your desired bank account, including IBAN and BIC, exactly as they found on a bank statement. Your bank details must be verified. To do this we will transfer a random amount of up to £2 within the next 2 business days to your account. On your bank statement, in the description of the transaction there will be a 10 character reference code. This reference code and the amount of the transfer need to be entered in the Bank Account section in your payleven account.
Connecting the Chip & PIN reader
iOS
- Download & install the payleven app from the App Store.
- Connect your Chip & PIN reader to your laptop or other USB power source with the USB cable that came with your device. Your reader will now automatically turn itself on. While your Chip & PIN reader is booting, activate Bluetooth on your iPhone/iPad by pressing Settings > Bluetooth > On.
Note: If the reader does not start automatically, turn on your Chip & PIN reader by pressing the small On/Off button on the left side.
- After approximately 3 minutes your Chip & PIN reader will display the payleven logo, the bluetooth signal, the battery status and the date and time (wait until there is no text written in the space between the payleven logo and the date and time, or it reads support@payleven.co.uk). When this display appears press and hold the 0 button on your Chip & PIN reader for 5 seconds. After releasing the button, the words «You can connect...» will appear on the display of your Chip & PIN reader.
- Go back to your iPhone/iPad Bluetooth settings (Settings > Bluetooth). The name of your Chip & PIN reader will appear as «Not Paired» in your Bluetooth menu. The name of your Chip & PIN reader will be displayed in the following format: «payleven» followed by your terminal’s number. This number can also be found on the back your card reader following S/N.
- Click on this name and a dialog will appear asking you to confirm the code that appears on your Chip & PIN reader. If this code matches the code on your Chip & PIN reader press Pair on the iPhone/iPad AND the green Confirm button on your Chip & PIN reader. (If the connection times out and you recieve a message saying «Pairing unsuccessful» then repeat the process starting with step 2 by holding down the 0 button.) Your iOS device will now say «Connected». You have now successfully connected your devices! Now you are ready to install and sign into the payleven app.
In the payleven app
- Open the payleven app and sign in with your log in credentials you created while registering at payleven.co.uk. After signing in, the app will automatically open the New payment screen.
- Navigate to your Card reader settings menu:
For iPhone: press Account > Settings > Card reader settings.
For iPad: open the app’s menu by pressing the upper left icon on your screen Settings > Card reader settings.
- One of the following screens will appear:
a. A screen with the words «Please select your terminal».
If this screen appears select the name of your Chip & PIN reader
OR
b. A screen with the words «Please select the type of card reader you use».
If this screen appears, tap on the image of the Chip & PIN reader. A new screen will appear where you will need to select the name of your Chip & PIN reader.
- A screen will appear saying «Deviceboarding succesful». Press «Ok».
- Go back to the New payment screen:
For iPhone: press Back > Settings > Account > Done.
For iPad: open the app’s menu by pressing the upper left icon on your screen New payment
You are now ready to accept card payments! Instructions for taking a payment are found in the chapter Accepting Card Payments.
Android
- Connect your Chip & PIN reader to your laptop or other USB power source with the USB cable that came with your device. Your reader will now automatically turn itself on. After approximately 3 minutes your Chip & PIN reader will display the payleven logo, the bluetooth signal, the battery status and the date and time (wait until there is no text written in the space between the payleven logo and the date and time, or it reads support@payleven.co.uk). When this display appears you are ready to connect your Chip & PIN reader to your smartphone/tablet!
Note: If the reader does not start automatically, turn on your Chip & PIN reader by pressing the small On/Off button on the left side.
- Download & install the payleven app from the Google Play Store onto your smartphone/tablet.
- Open the payleven app and sign in with your log in credentials you created when registering at www.payleven.co.uk.
- After signing in one of the following screens will appear:
a. A screen with the words «To accept Chip & PIN payments, initialise your terminal». If this screen appears, press the Start button.
OR
b. The Payment screen. If this screen appears, in the left upper corner press Payment > Account > Payment methods > Chip & PIN > Ok > Manage Terminals.
Note: If you are using multiple devices, your chosen card reader has its individual number, which can be found on the back following S/N.
- (At this stage your smartphone or tablet should give you the instruction to) Press and hold the 0 button on your Chip & PIN reader for 5 seconds. A code will appear on both your smartphone and the Chip & PIN reader. If these codes match, press Ok or Pair on the smartphone AND the green Confirm button on your reader. After a few seconds, the following message will appear on your smartphone: «Success! You are ready to use the Chip & PIN device!» Press Continue. You have now succesfully connected your devices! If you do not receive the code to pair the devices, press the red Cancel button on your card reader and repeat step 5 until you have a successfull connection.
- In the upper lefthand corner choose Payment from the drop down menu, this is the payment screen.
You are now ready to accept card payments! Instructions for taking a payment are found in the chapter Accepting Card Payments.
Accepting Card Payments
Before you start, make sure your Chip & PIN reader is not in sleepmode and is active by pressing any button or by pressing the On/Off button.
Enter the amount due on the payment screen
Navigate within the app to your Payment screen. Simply enter the amount you want to charge your customer. You can choose to add a picture by pressing the camera icon, and a description of the product/service you are selling by pressing the «Add description» field above the number pad. You can even choose previously stored products by pressing the icon to the right of the description line. When you are ready to take the payment simply press Continue on the payleven app, a message will pop up prompting you to choose the desired payment method chose the Chip & PIN reader.
For iOS: Before being able to select the card reader option, there may be a 10-15 second delay for the bluetooth connection to be automatically re-established. Once this connection has been made, the bluetooth signal will re-appear on the card reader display and you will be able to press the card reader option.
Insert the card
When «Insert Card» appears on the display of your Chip & PIN reader, ask your customer to insert his/her debit or credit card into the slot at the bottom of your reader.Complete the transaction
One of the following messages will now appear on the display of your Chip & PIN reader:
Enter PIN: If this message appears, ask your customer to enter his/her PIN and confirm the transaction by pressing the green Confirm button on the Chip & PIN reader. The PIN can be corrected by pressing the yellow Back button. To cancel the transaction, press the red Cancel button.
Please Sign: If this message appears, ask your customer to sign on the screen of your smartphone/tablet.
Once the transaction is complete, a confirmation message appears on both devices.
Send Receipt
You have the option to send a receipt to your customer by following the prompt after payment. To do so simply enter the customer’s email address. It is also possible to print out a receipt on the spot with a payleven supported printer. We recommend using a Bixolon mobile printer! Have a look at www.payleven.co.uk for more information.
Troubleshooting
Sleepmode
To save energy, the reader will automatically go into sleep mode after a couple of minutes of inactivity. You need to reactivate your card reader before making a payment. To do so, simply press any button or insert a card. It can take 10-15 seconds for the bluetooth connection to be automatically re-established as indicated by the bluetooth symbol on the reader’s display.
Card reader not working or not connecting
If you have a problem using your card reader this might be caused by a loss of bluetooth connection. Loss of bluetooth connection can be caused when:
- your reader is in Sleepmode (see previous heading)
- you update the payleven app
- you reset your smartphone/tablet settings
- you use a different smartphone/tablet
- you are using a different card reader
To re-establish the connection take the following steps:
iOS
- Activate your reader
Make sure your Chip & PIN reader is not in sleepmode and is not in sleepmode and is active by pressing any button or by pressing the On/Off button.
- Bluetooth settings
Go to your iPhone/iPad Bluetooth settings (Settings > Bluetooth), the name of your device can be found on the back of your card reader following S/N. Your device will be listed as one of the following:
Connected: If the device successfully connects, «Connected» will read beside the name of the card reader, in this case refer to earlier chapter Connecting your Chip & PIN reader under section 'In the payleven app' and follow steps 2 to 4.
Not connected: if your device is listed as not connected press on your readers name. After a few seconds your reader will be listed as «Connected». Proceed from step 2 in the earlier chapter Connecting the Chip & PIN reader under section 'In the payleven app'.
Not paired: If your Chip & PIN reader is listed as «Not paired» you need to re-take the steps in the Connecting the Chip & PIN reader to reconnect your card reader to your iPhone/iPad.
Note: If re-establishing the connection by following the above steps did not work, you can reset your connection by pressing the button to the right of «Not connected» and then press «Forget the device» afterwards refer to earlier chapter Connecting the Chip & PIN reader and start from step 2.
- Re-select your reader in the payleven app
To ensure your card reader is selected (or if using multiple card reader, the correct card reader) please refer to earlier chapter Connecting your Chip & PIN reader under section 'In the payleven app' and follow steps 2 to 4.
Android
In your payleven app select: Account > Manage terminals press Start. Your reader is now re-connected to your smartphone/tablet.
Note: If you have more than one device you will have to choose the correct device from the list before pressing Start. The name of your current device can be found on the back of your card reader following S/N.
Charging the Chip & PIN reader
You can charge your reader by using the USB cable that came with your device. Simply connect it to your laptop or other USB power source. It takes approximately 2 hours for the device to fully charge. The battery status is displayed on the left side of your card reader’s screen.
